Mariposa Native Plants: Prices on Generally Available Plants
Our plant list on Calscape's webpage:
Plant Prices:
- Our plant prices are approximately $12/gallon. This means that for a #1 nursery container
plant, the cost is $12, Mariposa County tax included.
- $12: #1 round nursery container, #1 square nursery container (G1); 4x4x9 tree pot (TP49).
- $16: #1 deep round nursery container (G1D); 4x4x14 deep tree pot (TP4D).
- $24: #2 round nursery container (G2).
- $30: #3 round nursery container (G3).
- $50: #5 round nursery container (G5).
- $125: #15 round nursery container (G15).
- $300: 24 inch square wooden box (B24).
- These cost bumps are mainly due to transportation costs, which factor into the price we
pay for propagation materials. We were beginning to lose money on the sale of plants in smaller
containers. We've stopped selling plants in 4-inch pots, small tree bands, and the like; too
many were being lost in the summer heat.
Seed Prices:
- Our seed prices are $7/packet. A packet of seeds contains 25 seeds and 5 plastic plant labels
that identify the seeds. A packet of acorns contains 12 acorns and 5 labels. If the seeds are
very small, such as California Poppy seeds, then we include about 1 teaspoon, approximately
200-400 seeds in the packet. We can sell some small seeds in 1 ounce packets. The price does
vary, according the availability of the plant seed. A typical starting price is $15/ounce.
Extra Plant Tags:
- Extra plant tags are $0.10/tag, with a minimum order of 20 tags. You can order tags for
mulitple plant species, but we cannot customize the tags; they are standard MNP plastic tags,
available for the plants that we sell. These are heavy-duty plastic, .5 x 5 inch, to be stuck
into the soil in a pot or in the ground near the plant. They are laser thermal printed and withstand
water and sun for several years.
Sales Tax:
- There is such a thing in California and in Mariposa County. At Mariposa Native Plants, we
include the sales tax into the price of the plants and seeds. For example, a one-gallon plant sells
for $12, which includes sales tax of 8.75%. On October 1st, 2022 in Mariposa County, the sales tax
increased by 1% to 8.75%.
Discounts:
- We are no longer offering small volume discounts. We continue to sell plants at around 20% discounts for
special events, such as the Mariposa Butterfly Festival.
Long-term, large, contract orders:
- These must be made, generally, well in advance of our growing seasons. We can determine, upon enquiry,
whether a request should be considered long-term. For typical long-term orders, we requre a 50% advance.
Contact us for further details on the contractual arrangements.
Shipping charges:
- We can now sell and ship plants within the lower 48 states via USPS Priority Mail. Contact us for prices.
For plants, there is a shipping & handling charge of $5.00, which covers the cost of the shipping box, the
packing materials, and delivery to the post office. The shipping and handling charge is added to the cost of
the plants and the postage, and this comprises the total cost of the plant shipment. For seeds, there is no
shipping & handling charge, just seed costs and postage costs.
Shipping cost estimates:
-
Typically, we ship in large flat-rate boxes, for which the postage is currently $26.00. Thus, for a shipment
of two 1-gallon plants, the total price for shipping the plants would be about 2 x $12 + $26.00 + $5.00, or
$55.00. If the plants are tall, up to 24 inches in height, we need to use a larger box, and the shipping cost
is between $50 and $60. We ship native plant seeds, and we again use USPS Priority Mail, which costs $10.45
(a bit more for a larger bundle of seed packets) per envelope. Large seeds and acorns are shipped in a USPS
Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box, which costs $11.00. We recommend that you refrigerate the seeds as soon as
you get them and keep them cool, not frozen, until you are ready to plant them. Mariposa Native Plants
complies with Article 4.5 of the California Seed Law and is thereby permitted to sell native plant seeds
within the state of California.
