A large native shrub or small tree found in the northern coast ranges from Oregon south to the San Francisco Bay and in the Sierra foothills south to east of Bakersfield. There are a few spotty populations in the Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains of southern California. In the spring it is covered with magenta flowers, and then it is one of the most noticeable plants on the landscape. In the fall it produces long, thin, dry seed pods.
In #1 and #3 containers.
